Help! I'm the Prey

So I went for a 30 mile bike ride today. I got a route off of map my run and thought I would try it out here in Idaho. Very rural roads in farm land. I was minding my own business and I hear the scream of a hawk or some bird of prey. I look up and it is diving at me. I was so scared. I start yelling at the stupid bird to get away from me and waving my arms. He circled around me and came at me again. Finally, he flew away back to his telephone pole from whence he came but I was pretty shaken up. I had another 15 miles to go now with the added worry of more bird attacks. It sure reminded me of "The Birds".

Anyway I want to wish you all good luck tomorrow. Remember to call me as I called you last week. I want to hear all the juicy details. I am actually coming home tomorrow. We decided not to go to our family reunion. We didn't want to drive to eastern Idaho. See you on Sunday.

This is it!

Our last week of training- crazy! It has been a wild ride, and I am excited to see how the race goes.

I found this website with tips. (Steph, I think this is the one you read!)

Tomorrow I am excited to do the practice triathlon, but I am going to take it really slow. (I hope that is okay with all of you. This is not the week to work too hard. :-)

Alright, ladies. See you tomorrow!

Molly, I am so glad you are feeling better about the swim. You are going to do awesome!

Kelly

PS
I wrote this on Sunday but never posted it. So, here you go! Thanks for the great night at the lake and the good workout this morning. This will be a new experience, that's for sure!

Congrats to Kirsten and Heather

I just want to say yahoo for our two olympic triathloners. Doesn't that sound cool like they were actually in the Olympics? You guys could be, seriously. I have a new found respect for triathletes.
I just wanted to write quickly that I had a great swim this morning. Thursday when Kelly and I swam it was my best swim up to that point and today was the best so far(that's now sayin' much though). But I finally feel a little more confident about the swim.
I'll be at the Y monday at 6:00 to meet kelly for a bike/run. Are you still swimming at 5:30 Kelly?

It's official

Hey Ladies,

I am officially registered for the triathlon and I took a big step and decided to register for the sprint and not the try-it. I hope this was the right decision!

My procrastination and indecision cost me $5! Doh!!

Molly, thanks for the great workout this morning. I am sure I talked too much. Just tell me to be quiet next time. It was great to run with new women!

Back in town

Hey Girls,

I can't believe this triathlon is next Saturday! I sure hope I am ready. I swam in a lake last Saturday and it was tough. I am excited though.

So, I was a little lacking in the bike training, so I am going to go for an hour bike ride in the morning. I will be at the Y at 6am and then I will be taking my bike in to get slicks. I hope some of you will join me.

Hope all is well for you!

Lake report

Hey girls,

I was just wondering how the lake swim was. I swam in a pool all day yesterday and LOVED it!

Take care. Keep training!

Sorry no lake tomorrow for me

Hey everyone,

I am sorry that I am a dork who can't think about logistics. My flight is at 6am on Tuesday and I can't leave for the lake until at least 5 or 6, which will make for a late night with the kids.

I am doing a bike/swim/run (kind of combining Monday and Tuesday's workouts since I will be in Cali.) I need to be home by 7 so I will be starting at 5:30.

Then I am gone for a week.

I hope all is well. Sorry about the lake. You all are still welcome to go without me. :-)

Friday Workout

Hey Ladies,

I will be swimming at the YMCA at 5:45am tomorrow for 30 minutes and then will be doing a "patience" run with Kirsten leaving the Y no later than 6:30 for 45 minutes. A patience run is a slow run where you keep your heart rate down. It will be a nice workout. Please come join!

Biking-woo hoo!

Well, I am starting to get a little more optimistic. :-) Kristie and I biked Brookman today which was the very first bike I did a month ago. I am happy to say it was MUCH easier today. She also convinced me to ride up Sunset which I have been avoiding, and it was not too bad either.

In other good news, I had a great run yesterday after my swim. (Only bad part: I was all alone, hint hint!) One of my silly fears is that I would lose the speed that I was finally starting to get when I was just running. I was able to run 3 miles in 25 minutes and I was thrilled! I was also exhausted!

I hope everyone else is doing well.

Swim/Run TOmorrow

Hey Ladies,

I am heading to bed, but I am doing the swim/run tomorrow. I will be in the pool by 5:30, so that I can avoid Masters. :-) I will run about 6:15. I would love anyone to join me.

I will be biking on Wednesday and I believe Kristie will be joining.

Hope things are good!

Kelly

Excited!

I am excited to do the triathlon. I won't be fast, but it will be a fun experience. I felt good on Saturday. I didn't do the swim like everyone else. However I ended up riding 25 miles on the bike and ran 3 miles in the middle of the biking. I actually felt pretty good. I have done the bike to run transition 3 or 4 times and it seemed a bit easier this time. So the next few weeks I want to focus a bit more on those transitions. I would love some company.

Your thoughts

So...Marni and Kelly, what are your thoughts on our practice tri this morning? I had to skeedaddle so we couldn't talk much when we were done. I can say I have mixed emotions. I felt a little better on the swim (that is until I found out the race swim is a 1/2 mile not 500m like I thought.) I'm trying not to stress too much and just plan on focusing a lot on being in the pool for the next month! The cycle was good but my thighs and buns are tight(and not in a good way)today. By the time we got to the run my legs were on auto-pilot and I was just glad to finish!
Having said all of that, I really had a fun time. I love the variety and the adventure of it all!
Kirsten and Heather how did you feel after your run? How's eveyone else doing?
Thanks ladies!

Practice Triathlon Saturday

Hey girls,

I hope you had a nice workout this morning. I loved being with friends and catching up. How was the later run? Saturday the schedule says to do 90 minutes of all 3. I was thinking of doing 15 minute swim, 45 minute bike ride and 30 minute run.

Anyone want to join me? I was thinking of starting at 6 so it is not so hot.

Let me know! I am thinking of picking up triathlon shorts. We will see...

Team Hoyt

If you want to be inspired for your training and in life then take a minute and watch this video about team Hoyt.

I have to kick it into gear!

I have had a hard time training on my trip to Texas. It is so hot and humid here that running is a very difficult thing. I have not stuck to the training program as well as I should have with the hot weather and my kids getting some strange sickness with a trip to the ER (they are better now). I could give a ton of excuses but now I just need to step up and kick it into gear when I get back to Portland. I have done a lot of swimming in my parents' pool, I have to swim at least 80 laps to get in 25 minutes of swimming. I have ran a little and biked on their stationary bike but now I am ready to really train. Let me know when and where you are training the rest of the week and starting Wednesday I will be there.

As for what I wore for the triathlon last year, I swam in my suit with my bike shorts. I wore a sports bra under my suit. For transition 1 I pulled down my suit, put on a dry shirt, socks and shoes and I was off. I did wear a race number belt. The lake was warm enough so I did not wear a wetsuit. The Luna All Womens Triathlon is low key, women just go out and have fun. It reminded me of the same attitude as the Hippie Chick. It really did not matter if you had a "fancy" bike, everyone was just there cheering each other on. There were all shapes and sizes with a lot of kids cheering their moms on. There is a mini triathlon for kids, I am thinking of signing Baylee up for it. My neighbors' kids all did it last year and loved it.

I am excited to train with you all when I get back in town and get to know you all better.

Watched a HIM today!

We've been vacationing in Sunriver this past week and unbeknown to us we were here for the Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival. This morning they had a half marathon, full marathon, endurance duathlon and a half-iron triathlon. I decided to be at the finish line when the tri was finishing and it was sooooo inspirational. It has been hot here this week and you could tell that the athletes were wiped out from the intense sun.

I also checked out the clothing that most triathletes were sporting. Lots of one piece tri suits and some women were running in just swimsuits. Many very spiffy bikes as well.

All shapes and sizes of people were competing. It is wonderful to see that those who compete aren't all skinny-minnie sixpack hardbodies. Lots of regular looking folks.

Anyways, it really got me very jazzed about the upcoming race. I was starting to loose a bit of steam about it, but now I'm psyched. Time to step up my training and find a real bike...

The Good, the bad, the ugly

Hey Gals,

Just thought I would give a little update to keep myself accountable.

The Good- The new bike is great!! I ran Roy Rogers on Friday and Monday and it took me 15 minutes less on the new bike!

The Bad- I am still SSSLLLOOOWWW!! I also decided to swim as fast as I could this morning to see how "fast" I am, and I am not fast at all.

The Ugly- I have gained 5 lbs since I started this training- yuck!! So apparently, I need to change my eating. I do feel stronger overall, but my new muscles will not show themselves if I keep gaining flab. :-)

So, how is everyone else? It has been so fun training with many of you.

I bought a bike!

So, it is not a road bike- I am not quite ready for that commitment financially!! It was a bike listed on Craigs List that happened to be around the corner from my house. The owner works with my neighbor in the fire department and they are just a nice couple. The bike is a mountain bike with road tires and no shocks and suspensions- thank goodness! The gears felt smoother, the bike is lighter, and I think it will be a good bike for me as I am trying to figure this whole thing out.

So, I will probably still not be able to keep up with my friends on road bikes, but I will feel much better. I am ready for my next bike ride!

Heather and I did Roy Rogers on Friday, and I will admit it was very tough for me. I was going way too slow for Heather. I look forward to trying it again on my "new" bike!

How was everyone else's week?

Biking this morning

Hey ladies! I completely forgot to post that I am meeting Heather at the Y at 6 this morning for a long bike ride. If you happen to check this right now, I hope to see you then!

Triathlon gear

I've been thinking about all the stuff that I could buy for this race like...padded bike shorts(my tush still hurts from Monday), an outfit you do everything in so you don't have to change, a belt thingy that you put your number on so you just have to buckle it real quick, one of those tiny shammy things that you see the olympic swimmers use to dry themselves with, bike shoes that fit(if I decide to use the clipless pedals)... I could go on but I was just wondering what is essential? Maybe those who are experienced(Kirsten and Mindy) could help me decide what I really need and what is more of a "perk".

I want to thank Kelly for putting this together. Hopefully it will inspire me and keep me more accountable.

I ran 4 miles today, need to swim tomorrow but I don't want to. ha!

Loving the Variety!

So, yesterday's workout was tough for me. I couldn't keep up with my other biking buddies, and my legs felt like jello for the run!

Today's workout was awesome! I am really enjoying swimming and the running afterward doesn't feel too bad. It was great to be with Molly and Kirsten for our 30 minute run. Thanks ladies!

So, tomorrow at 6am at the Y. It says 30 minute run, but I was actually hoping to do a 4-5 miler- slow!!

Let me know if you are interested or I will see you tomorrow!

MIndy, I hope you had a good flight. Class went well today, I thought, only a few kids. :-)

Thanks Kelly!

Thanks for setting this blog up, Kelly, it will be a great way for us to stay on track with our training. I am going to send this link to my sister-in-law, Angie, who will be doing the triathlon as well so she will know what we are doing over here in Portland. This is going to be fun! I loved doing the triathlon last year, it was an incredible experience. This year will be even better because of all the support from great friends.

Mindy

Welcome Tribabes!

Hey Mindy, Stephanie, Molly, Heather, Kirsten and Marnie!

This is going to be so much fun! I, for one, need to know I am not alone. I need accountability and I am honestly really nervous about this whole process. Thanks for all the support. I love hanging out with all of you!

Use this blog as much or as little as you want.

Tomorrow I will be at the Y at 6am for a swim and run. Join me if you would like! I am lifting weights on Mondays and Thursdays whenever the workout for that day is finished.
